ZODIAC AND THE MONSTER, READERS OF ELIOT’S POEMS

IN ITALIANO (PIU’ O MENO)

November 10, 2018 – Here two quotes from the poem The Waste Land of T.S. Eliot. It’s very probable that Zodiac Killer was influenced by the poem in the writing of the Halloween Card riddle. It’s certain Zodiac cited Tim Holt and the death wheel (discovered by Tahoe27, zodiackillersite.com).

On page 4 of his card, Zodiac put 4 of the 5 deaths of the “death wheel” drawn on the comic’s cover. They are: by knife, by gun, by fire, by w…, by rope. Zodiac didn’t put in the card just one “death by”, even if it’s one of the two deaths to whom Red Mask, the main character, is condemned to. It’s also the same death of “Titwillo”, cited by Zodiac in 1974. Why didn’t Zodiac put it on the card? Was he drowning?

Here a comment on the poem. Here a solution of the strange symbol in the Halloween Card based on Phoenician alphabet.

I The burial of dead
Madame Sosostris, famous clairvoyante,
Had a bad cold, nevertheless
Is known to be the wisest woman in Europe,
With a wicked pack of cards. Here, said she,
Is your card, the drowned Phoenician Sailor,
(Those are pearls that were his eyes. Look!)Here is Belladonna, the Lady of the Rocks,
The lady of situations.
Here is the man with three staves, and here the Wheel,
And here is the one-eyed merchant, and this card,
Which is blank, is something he carries on his back,
Which I am forbidden to see. I do not find
The Hanged Man. Fear death by water.

IV Death by water
Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,
Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep sea swell
And the profit and loss.
A current under sea
Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell
He passed the stages of his age and youth
Entering the whirlpool.
Gentile or Jew
O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.

The Waste Land, T.S. Eliot

Also in the Monster of Florence’s case there is a letter sent from a self-claimed Monster that quotes Eliot.
It’s arrived to La Nazione newspaper in Florence on 20 september 1985.

Zodiac Mostro calligrafia

Translation

I AM REALLY CLOSE TO YOU.
YOU WON’T CATCH ME, IF I
WON’T TO.
THE FINAL NUMBER IS STILL
FAR. 16 ARE FEW.
I DON’T HATE ANYBODY, BUT I NEED
TO DO IT, IF I WANT TO LIVE.
BLOOD AND TEARS WILL FLOW
SOON.
THIS CAN’T GO ON LIKE THIS.
YOU’VE GOT IT ALL WRONG.
IT’S YOUR LOSS.
I WON’T MAKE MISTAKES ANYMORE,
THE POLICE DO.
IN ME THE NIGHT NEVER ENDS,
I’VE CRIED FOR THEM.
I WAIT FOR YOU.

The quote comes from Little Gidding part II:

“Water and fire succeed
The town, the pasture and the weed.
Water and fire deride
The sacrifice that we denied.
Water and fire shall rot
The marred foundations we forgot,
Of sanctuary and choir.
This is the death of water and fire.

In the uncertain hour before the morning
Near the ending of interminable night
At the recurrent end of the unending…

Compare the Monster’s (?) letter with the Zodiac’s letter of October 5, 1970.

  1. 13” – “16” (body count was a typical element of the propaganda during the Vietnam War, and it was used by both)
  2. “You’ll hate me, but…” – “I don’t hate anybody, but
  3. “There reports city police pigs are close to me…”. – “I am really close to you“; “… the police do”.
  4. “I’m crackproof” – “You won’t catch me

In italian the Night never ends – letter sounds good but also a little bit strange, too much laconic and poetical to have been written by a common murderer. The author could be, for example, an american friend citizen who wants also to avoid mistakes.
